The Topographical Distribution of White Matter Damage in Parkinson’s Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

چکیده
Introduction. Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is the second most common cause of neurodegenerativeparkinsonism after idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) [1]. A different ante-mortem distribution of white matter (WM) damage may exist in PD and PSP patients, which might be helpful in the diagnostic work-up of these patients [2]. In this study, we investigated microstructural changes of WM in patients with PD and different PSP syndromes using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Diffusion Tensor Imaging
Clinical Features of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by parkinsonism, supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, dysphagia and cognitive dysfunction. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) PSP criteria are widely used for clinical diagnosis. However, the clinical phenotypes of pathologically confir...
متن کاملFluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in Richardson’s syndrome and progressive supranuclear palsy-parkinsonism.
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that postural instability and cognitive decline in patients with Richardson’s syndrome could be a consequence of reduced thalamic and frontal metabolism. Severe Parkinsonian signs in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy-parkinsonism may be reflected by alterations in putaminal metabolism. METHODS Eleven patients with Richardson’s syndrome, 8 patients with pr...
متن کاملDiffusion Tensor Imaging of Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: A Tract-Based Spatial Statistics Study
Although often clinically indistinguishable in the early stages, Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) have distinct neuropathological changes. The aim of the current study was to identify white matter tract neurodegeneration characteristic of each of the three syndromes. Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) was used to perform a whole...
متن کامل9.4 T MR microscopy of the substantia nigra with pathological validation in controls and disease
BACKGROUND The anatomy of the substantia nigra on conventional MRI is controversial. Even using histological techniques it is difficult to delineate with certainty from surrounding structures. We sought to define the anatomy of the SN using high field spin-echo MRI of pathological material in which we could study the anatomy in detail to corroborate our MRI findings in controls and Parkinson's ...
متن کاملStriopallidodentate Calcification and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy-Like Phenotype in a Patient with Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism
We present a 77-year-old woman with levodopa-nonresponsive parkinsonism, dementia, and supranuclear gaze palsy on vertical and horizontal gaze. Laboratory findings were consistent with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, and brain computed tomography showed extensive bilateral calcifications of the basal ganglia, centrum semiovale, dentate nuclei, and cerebellar white matter. These results illustrat...
